DETROIT — It was the first Catholic League tournament title for Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes since 2016. Coach Steve Robak couldn’t have been happier for his team.
His Lakers defeated Wixom St. Catherine Academy, 44-27, in the Cardinal (C-D) Division of the CHSL girls basketball championship finals on Saturday night at U-D Mercy’s Calihan Hall.
“I’m extremely proud because this year has been a tough year so far between injuries and different things,’’ Robak said. “We’re starting to play more the way we would like to play.’’
In the first half, the lead went back and forth but at the half the Lakers held a 20-16 advantage.
“In the first half we weren’t really pleased with how we handled the trap, very sloppy. too many turnovers. We had good shots but the girls seemed very confused about the 3-point line, we were shooting four or five feet behind our line and obviously not making a lot,’’ Robak said.
Then to begin the third quarter the Lakers ran off seven straight points starting with a 3-pointer by freshman Quinn Robak (the coach’s daughter).
“The second half I feel like we settled in, we started pressing them a little bit,’’ Coach Robak said. “We got a few turnovers that created some easy buckets, then we made some shots, kind of expanded our lead, again we had a good third quarter. That was an important time for us.’’
Junior Brooklyn Robak (the coach’s niece) paced the Lakers with 17 points while Quinn Robak added 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter.
Our Lady of the Lakes outscored the Stars, 14-7, in the third quarter.
